ABOUT THE ARTIST:
British born Jake Chessum started as a graphic designer at St Martins in London in the early nineties but changed direction mid degree as part of a renegade group who devotedĀ their studies to the discipline of photography. Over the past 15 years, he has become a renowned portrait photographer creating a formidable body of timeless portraits for a vast array of international magazine titles.
Jake collaborated with NY magazine over a period of 5 years shooting on the streets to create the now iconic centerfolds depicting the extraordinary people of New York City, culminating in the 2007 publication of LOOK BOOK, by Melcher Media.
Chessums new monograph RUBBISH is a dramatic departure from his more public persona. A collection of photographs of discarded items in urban environments created over the last ten years in various cities during his travels around the world. They depict an environment where human presence is limited to that which is left behind.
PRESS
"For Chessum the photographs are about line and color-composition in the vein of Saul Leiter, William Eggleston and Harry Callahan"
The New Yorker
"In the tradition of the 'object trouve', he elevates these flung forks and squashed strawberries to things of beauty and intrigue"
